“Hana Tehelku, the Director General of the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA), is a distinguished legal professional known for her tenacity and integrity. Before stepping into her role at ECMA, Ms. Hana built a formidable reputation as a tough and dedicated prosecutor. Her career has been marked by an unwavering commitment to justice, particularly in the areas of economic crime, anti-corruption, and financial fraud.

Ms. Hana holds an LLB from Mekelle University, an LLM from Addis Ababa University and MA in developmental studies from EGST (Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology). Throughout her career, she has been at the forefront of investigating and prosecuting complex financial crimes, including fraud and anti-money laundering (AML) cases. Her work in these areas has earned her recognition as a principled and relentless advocate for accountability and transparency in Ethiopia’s legal system.

Since taking office as Director General of the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA) in September 2024, Ms. Hana Tehelku has led the Authority through a period of bold regulatory reform and institution building. Under her leadership, ECMA issued key directives, launched Ethiopia’s first Capital Market Regulatory Sandbox, and licensed the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX), which was officially launched in January 2025. She also oversaw the licensing of Ethiopia’s first investment banks and several other market service providers, marking the start of active capital market operations. These achievements reflect Ms. Hana’s resolute commitment to building a transparent, inclusive, and modern capital market that supports Ethiopia’s economic transformation and investment goals.”
