Biography

Amaka Okechuwu Opara is an investment professional with over 15 years of experience in private sector and international development. She is the founding partner at WEAV Capital, an early stage VC dedicated to funding and supporting the most innovative female founders across Africa. She previously worked at the World Bank on private sector development, directly managing a portfolio of $1.3 billion in projects across Sub Saharan Africa. She has extensive experience in working with entrepreneurs and in setting up investment vehicles. She oversaw a $2 million grant facility for renewable energy companies, and also funded and provided technical assistance to several business incubators and venture capital firms in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Prior to the World Bank, Amaka Okechuwu Opara worked with several organizations including the United Nations Foundation, the Brookings Institute, and the Center for Global Development where she worked on financial inclusion, regulation and access in Latin America and the Asia Pacific. She started her career as an Investment Banker in London at Deutsche Bank, structuring debt and equity financing for European hedge funds.

Amaka Okechuwu Opara is a Fellow with the Harambe Entrepreneur Alliance and was a Global Shaper with the World Economic Forum (WEF). In 2015, she was selected by the WEF to participate at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She sits on the board of several companies and served as the World Bank representative on the board of the Development Bank of Nigeria. She holds a BSc in Economics from the London School of Economics, and an MA in Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University.
