Biography

Renand Pretorius takes the lead in the Mauritius office on Tax and Data Protection.

Renand Pretorius also regularly advises on M&A transactions, securities and financial services, and data protection, and conducts complex due diligence reviews.
In addition to being known for his sound advice on tax structuring and his commercial practicality, Renand Pretorius manages the business development and client portfolios for the Mauritius office.
Renand Pretorius is a “new breed of lawyer” who understands the commercial realities which clients face and embeds these in his advice and solutions to clients. His hands-on and solution-driven approach coupled with his knowledge of technology and financial acumen makes him a highly valued member of our team.
Having joined the Mauritian office in 2018, Renand Pretorius’s dedication and hard work has shone through, and he was recently promoted from associate to senior associate earlier this year.
Renand Pretorius is the holder of a BComm LLB (Law and Commerce) from Stellenbosch University and was admitted as an attorney in South Africa in 2015. He is also a South African tax practitioner and holds a tax certification from University of Leiden, Netherlands. He is registered as a foreign lawyer in Mauritius since 2018.

Some of his experience includes:

• Handling data protection matters on behalf of clients such as Macquarie Group, Uber, Vivo Energy, PraxisIFM and Schindlers. His work spans undertaking data protection assessments, giving advice on compliance and dealing with regulator disputes.
• Assisting with Tax matters, such as advising Old Mutual, Rand Merchant Bank, Aspen Pharmaceuticals, Brait, DHL, Eaton Group, Expedia, Sanlam and Standard Bank on their local tax requirements for a structured product being launched in the South African market through Mauritius vehicles.
• Guiding clients on M&A deals, such as acting for Taylor Smith Investment Ltd in acquiring 100% interest in the Indian ocean arm of one of Lafarge Holcim for a purchase price of USD 140 million, in a transaction that spanned six jurisdictions. Additional deals such as advising Mourant Global Services in acquiring a local provider, Standard Bank on local BPO structuring, DHL on employee tax matters and RMB on product structuring for treasury.
