Biography

Andrew Slater is an actuarial and investment expert with 25 years’ experience. In his career in institutional investment, he has worked in many countries with pension funds, insurers and wealth management institutions, ranging from high-net-wealth private banks to mass-market defined contribution providers. During his career he has successfully deliberately sought out the areas that presented a challenge to the orthodox.
In 2016 Andrew was elected a member of Council of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, the top governing body of the profession, and additionally sits on its Research and Thought Leadership Committee and was appointed Deputy Chair of the organising committee for the IFoA Africa Conference. Andrew is also a CFA Charterholder, and a member of several local actuarial societies in Africa.

Andrew works as an independent adviser on a full range of actuarial and investment matters, working with institutional investors across Africa. He also works with clients outside Africa wishing to invest in Africa. He has clients in several west African countries, including the African Development Bank. He has also been commissioned by the World Bank to conduct research with Kenyan pension schemes relating to their investment decision making.

Andrew has been focused on Africa for the last six years, with the results he spends more time in Africa each year. His career started with Price Waterhouse, and has worked in investment management with SEI Investments, and a start-up venture to create a pension indemnity insurer. SEI Investments is one of the original two manager-of-managers investment firms in the US; Andrew joined SEI Investments shortly after they established in the UK. Andrew was at the forefront of the development of SEI Investments in the UK, in the Netherlands and in South Africa.
Andrew is alumnus of Cambridge University with a first-class undergraduate MA in mathematics and postgraduate MMath in theoretical physics, and an alumnus of London Business School.
