Biography

Tom MacDonald is a commercial intelligence practitioner and business consultant specialising in Africa and other emerging markets who has led dozens of assignments for many of the world’s most successful financial services, technology, and energy companies.

Currently, Managing Consultant and Financial Services Practice Lead at the business research and advisory firm Global Growth Markets, Tom also leads the company’s Digital Payments Practice. Tom was educated at the University of Victoria, Canada and hold a B.a. in Economics. His work has been published and quoted in the leading industry journals and cited in publications including Asian Banking and Finance, PaymentSource, and the China Daily.

Having advised many Western companies looking at opportunities in global growth markets, as well as major growth-market based corporations as they expand internationally, Tom has first-hand experience of both sides of the emerging markets phenomenon. He has helped American firms define market opportunities in Kenya and Nigeria, worked with Western e-commerce companies to help them compete in Egypt’s digital payments and consumer good sectors, and advised Middle Eastern oil and gas firms on best practices and competitive opportunities in Africa.
