Biography

Dr Mthandazo Ngwenya is Africa Director at Intellecap, part of the Aavishkaar-Intellecap Group. He is responsible for executing on the group corporate strategy of “Building business for the Next 3 Billion”, expand to new markets in Africa, Middle East and Asia, and steer the company in the direction of realising its vision. He plays a key role in strategic decision making across all initiatives and service lines of Intellecap.

He leverages market based solutions to advise corporates, investors, development finance institutions and governments. Design structures that channel capital and technical assistance to innovative ideas and enterprises to achieve scale and help address critical development challenges. Prior to joining Intellecap, he held various positions in financial services and consultancy rising to the position of Chief Financial Officer and Managing Director. He has extensive and diverse experience ranging from international banking, strategy consulting, project management, corporate finance, and socio-economic development.

He draws on this wealth of expertise to advise blue chip multinational corporations, international developmental organisations and governments to implement successful economic development projects and structure development financing solutions. Dr Ngwenya has formidable international investment and fund-management skills having run and substantially grown development funds and assets under management in excess of $2 billion with annual investments of more than $100 million aimed at developmental financing in Africa.
Dr Ngwenya has written and presented conference papers, appeared in various publications and featured on television and radio interviews discussing topical issues related to business, economics, sustainable development and politics in Africa with media stations such as CNBC, BBC, CNN and SABC Africa.

Dr Ngwenya holds a Doctor of Laws (LLD) from the University of South Africa, a Master of Laws (LLM cum laude) in Public International Law from the University of London, a Master of Science in Financial Management (MSc) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) Finance specialism from Edinburgh and is a Chartered Company Secretary (FCIS). He is a former Executive Committee Member of the Tshwane University of Technology and Chairman of the Audit Committee of Council and a member of the Institute of directors. A former Board Examiner of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries in Southern Africa on Corporate Governance, written in 10 countries – in addition to being a Fellow Member of the institute.

He has served as director on various boards in the public and private sector, served as public officer and investment officer of various investment funds and as an advisor on Bilateral Investment Treaty policy to the Southern African Development Community in Botswana. In 2017, he was invited by the German Finance Ministry to present position papers on financial inclusion policy at the G20 Summit in Berlin. He was appointed in the same year to serve on the Senior Advisory Group of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris, helping develop Blended Financing principles applicable to OECD member states. In 2018 Dr Ngwenya was appointed to the Africa Advisory Board of the Global Steering Group for Impact Investing (GSG) to contribute towards the establishment of impact investing national boards across Africa.
