Biography

Abenet Bekele is the Chief Market Operations Officer of the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX), first of its kind in Africa, a private-public partnership between market actors, the members of the exchange, and the government. Abenet is responsible for the major operations of the exchange including trading operation, clearing and settlement, and actors certification. He has severed the exchange since its foundation and has been instrumental in establishing the trading platform, crafting trading contracts and building the capacity of traders. Prior to his current position, he was a Chief Strategy Officer responsible for the strategy design, product development and implementation of the exchange.

Abenet is a strong promoter of capital market and he is currently a member of the committee tasked to craft capital market development road map for the government of Ethiopia.

He received his Master’s degree in Commerce and has more than seventeen years of experience in Financial Management, Commodity Exchange and Business Strategy design. He has specialized Capital Market at George Washington University and has been IFC- Milken inaugural capital market program fellow in 2016/17.
