Chris Grune

Christopher Grune has long experience on both the buy and sell-sides of the financial industry. An Illinois native, he began his career in agricultural commodities at the Chicago Board of Trade, but since has worked as a trader, broker, research analyst and fund manager at firms including State Street Global Advisors, Citigroup and Societe Generale across regions and asset classes. He is a CFA Charter holder, has an MBA from Columbia Business School as well as a Certificate in Quantitative Finance and the Professional Risk Managers’ designation. He has worked in the US, Japan and currently in Kenya. As a fund manager, he managed approximately $1 billion in emerging market assets for institutional investors, with more than half of that located in Africa. He also frequently performed due diligence on pre-IPO firms, including Nigerian banks, East African telecoms and pan-African oil exploration and production firms. More recently he has invested in Kenya on an angel/VC basis in real estate, consumer goods and transport. He is a co-founder and managing director of Barani Capital, a Nairobi-based corporate finance advisory. He has performed training on the derivatives markets for the Nairobi Securities Exchange, consulted for the World Bank/IFC on Investment Policy and Promotion (IPP) and been a speaker at Africa-focused conferences in New York, London, Boston, Philadelphia and Nairobi.
